If you're seeing camera or microphone permission errors when starting your assessment, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Check your browser permissions
If you see a "Access to the camera was forbidden" message, click the icon to the left of the URL bar in Chrome. From there, enable Camera and Microphone, then reload the assessment page and try again.
Step 2: Test your camera on another site
Check whether Chrome can access your camera on other websites using a test site like webcammictest.com.
If your camera doesn't work there either, you'll need to enable camera access in your system settings:
- Windows: Follow these instructions and make sure "Allow desktop apps to access your camera" is turned on.
- macOS: Follow the instructions here.
- Android: Follow the instructions here.
- iOS: Go to Settings > Apps > Chrome and enable camera and microphone under "Allow Chrome to access".
Once done, reload the assessment page and try again.
Step 3: Review Chrome's site permissions
If Chrome does have camera access but it's still not working:
- Restart Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu (top right) and go to Settings.
- Under Privacy and security, click Site settings.
- Select Camera and make sure "Sites can ask to use your camera" is enabled.
- Check the "Not allowed to use your camera" list and remove vervoe if it appears there.
- Repeat these steps for Microphone.
Step 4: Additional troubleshooting
If it's still not working:
- Update Chrome — click the three-dot menu, go to Help > About Google Chrome to check for updates.
- Try an Incognito window — open a new incognito window and attempt the assessment from there.
- Reset Chrome settings — go to Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults > Reset settings, then restart Chrome and try again.
