There are three key ways to create a skills assessment with Vervoe:
- Use a pre-built library assessment
- Create an assessment from scratch
- Use the AI-assisted builder
This article will guide you through how to Create an Assessment from Scratch. Want full control over your assessment? Creating an assessment from scratch in Vervoe lets you design a tailored candidate experience that aligns with your hiring needs. Here’s how to build it step-by-step.
1. Create a New Assessment
- Click Create New Assessment from your dashboard. Add a job title and select the skills you want to assess. These skills will help structure your assessment and group your questions.
- Click Create Assessment to get started.
2. Add Your Own Questions
Create Questions
Head to the Create tab and begin adding questions manually. Choose the response type that best reflects the task:
- Info - for introduction pages
- Text – for written responses
- Multiple choice – for quick knowledge checks
- Video or audio – for communication or presentation skills
- Google Docs, Slides or Sheets – for realistic task-based responses
- MS Office Document, Presentation or Excel - for MS office users
- Code editor – for technical roles
- Upload - for retrieving candidate uploads
- Number - for quick math
Each question can include supporting content like images, videos, documents or links. Add clear instructions and any resources the candidate might need to complete the task.
Suggested Questions
In the Suggested tab, you can browse individual questions recommended based on the skill you select.
-
For best results, choose broader skills (e.g., "communication" instead of "executive communication").
-
Click Add to include a question in your assessment, or Save it to your personal library for future use.
-
After adding a question, you can Edit it to customise as needed.
If no direct matches are found, the system will suggest related questions. If nothing appears, try selecting a broader skill.
Saved Questions
Save any question you create or find in the library to your personal library by clicking the bookmark icon. You’ll find all your saved questions under the Saved tab next time you create an assessment.
Multi-media Questions
You can also add media material such as video, audio, photo's, code or PDF's to the questions for candidates to view or download.
3. Organise Your Questions
Each question is grouped under a skill—this makes scoring and analysis easier later. You can:
- Reorder questions using the double-arrow icon
- Move questions between skill groups
- Create new skill groups under the Skill Groups tab in the left menu
If you’re assessing multiple skills, group questions accordingly so your results reflect performance by skill.
4. Add Sample Answers and Scoring Instructions
Under each question, you can:
- Add a sample answer to help our AI understand what a good response looks like
- Add manual scoring instructions to guide your team during review
This ensures consistency across reviewers and improves fairness.
5. Adjust Question Settings
Each question includes optional settings:
- Add a timer
- Mark as required
- Exclude from AI/manual grading
📝 Note: If a required question has a timer, and the time runs out, the candidate may not be able to submit a response. Use the "Do not grade" setting for things like intro videos or instructional slides.
Click Preview in the top right at any time to see how the assessment will appear to candidates.
6. Set Up Assessment Settings
Once you're happy with your content, click the Settings tab in the top-right corner. From here, you can:
- Set a time limit for the full assessment
- Enable or disable a final feedback question
- Randomise question order
- Randomise multiple choice answer order
- Auto-progress or reject candidates based on scores (optional)
🕐 Important: You can use either a time limit for the whole assessment or timers on individual questions—not both.
7. Final Review and Save
Use the Preview button to check the full assessment. Make any final edits, then click Save. Your assessment is now ready to publish and share with candidates.
Summary
Creating an assessment from scratch gives you full control over what candidates see, how they’re assessed, and how results are grouped. It's ideal when you want a hiring process tailored exactly to the role and your organisation’s standards.
