Grouping questions is an effective way to assess specific skills or attributes relevant to a role. By organising your questions into skill-based groups, you’ll be able to view scores for each individual skill area—alongside the overall assessment score—giving you deeper insight into candidate strengths.
For example, is customer empathy more critical than attention to detail for this role? With question groups, you can see exactly how candidates perform in each of the key constructs, allowing you to make more informed hiring decisions.
How to Access Question Groups
To get started, click on the Question Groups tab located in the left-hand panel of the assessment editor.
Groups are automatically created based on the skills selected when building the assessment. However, these can be easily customised to suit your needs.
Customising Question Groups
You can:
- Rename existing skill groups
- Move questions between groups
- Reorder skill groups
- Add new skill groups to better reflect the structure of your assessment
When you create a new group, it will also appear in the Skills dropdown in the question editor, allowing you to assign questions directly to it.
How to Add a New Skill Group
- Click Add new Skill at the top of the Question Groups panel.
- Enter the new skill name.
- Drag questions into the relevant group.
How to Reorder Skill Groups
- Go to the Settings page of your assessment.
- Use the drag-and-drop function to move skill groups up or down the list to your preferred order — similar to how you reorder individual questions.
- All changes are saved automatically.
Randomising Questions Within a Skill Group
To introduce variation for each candidate, you can randomise the order of questions within a skill group:
- Slide the toggle next to Randomise Questions to the right.
- Select how many questions from that group you want to include per candidate (e.g. 3 out of 5).
This is particularly useful when you want to keep assessments fresh or avoid order bias.
Displaying Scores for Skill Groups
By default, scores are shown as percentages, but you can customise how results are displayed using Advanced Scoring.
To enable Advanced Scoring:
- Slide the Advanced Scoring toggle to the right.
- Under each group, you’ll be given two options for displaying results:
-
- Percentage score
- Custom text labels based on score ranges (e.g. 80–100 = “Excellent”, 50–79 = “Developing”)
If using text labels, simply enter the range and the label you’d like to appear for each band.
Skill Groups allow you to structure your assessment around key skills or attributes, helping you target the areas that matter most. Easily view individual skill scores alongside the overall assessment result for a more detailed evaluation of each candidate. You can customise and randomise the assessment flow, and control how results are displayed to suit your hiring preferences. Reordering Skill Groups gives you greater flexibility to ensure your most important skills are assessed in the right sequence.
Please note: changes to the order will only apply to candidates who start the assessment after the update; those already in progress will see the original order.
