If you're seeing an alert that says "manual grading required" to unlock the score of your assessment, it means there's at least one question type that requires manual grading.
Manual grading allows you to assess responses that can’t be scored accurately by AI—either because of the question type or because you’ve opted to review them yourself. Until manual grading is completed, the candidate will not receive an overall assessment score.
Which Question Types Require Manual Grading?
Some question types require manual grading, meaning the candidate’s score won’t be calculated by AI until you've reviewed their response.
The following question types must be graded manually, and this setting cannot be turned off:
- Presentation
- Spreadsheet
- File Upload
These questions will not receive an AI score, and the candidate’s overall assessment score will remain locked until manual grading has been completed. You’ll be prompted to grade these via the AI Health portal or directly on the Candidate Card.
In addition, Text, Audio, and Video question types can be marked as Grade Manually by selecting the option from the question settings.
Note: If any question in an assessment is marked as Grade Manually, no overall score will be available until all manually graded questions have been reviewed for each candidate.
How to Enable Manual Grading
To mark a question for manual grading:
- Go to the assessment editor.
- Select the question you’d like to grade manually.
- Tick the Grade Manually option in the question settings.
This will exclude the question from AI grading and flag it for manual review after completion.
How to Grade Manually
Once a candidate completes an assessment with manually graded questions, they’ll appear in Select without a score. You’ll see a tag next to their name and a prompt in the AI Health indicator letting you know that manual grading is required.
There are two ways to complete manual grading:
1. AI Health Portal
- Click the AI Health indicator.
- You’ll see a list of candidates with ungraded responses.
- Only questions requiring manual grading will be displayed.
- Review and grade each response from this view.
2. Candidate Card
- Open the candidate's report card in Select.
- Questions that require manual grading will be clearly highlighted.
- This also applies to integration and shared candidate cards.
Once the manually graded answers have been reviewed, the candidate’s overall assessment score will be unlocked—combining both manually graded and AI-graded responses.
