How Anti-Cheating Features Work in Practice
Vervoe’s anti-cheating tools are designed to protect the integrity of your assessment results without compromising the candidate experience. Here’s how our key features work in practice.
📚 Plagiarism Detection
Plagiarism detection is available for text-based questions only and must be activated at the question level in the Question Settings.
When enabled, Vervoe compares the first 500 words of candidate answers to the same question across the entire platform. If two or more candidates submit identical or very similar responses, a plagiarism flag is triggered. This applies across all languages.
How Flags Appear
-
Select Page: A plagiarism icon will be displayed next to flagged candidates.
-
Candidate Report Card: View detailed matches by clicking 'Review Answers'.
Important Notes
-
Flag resets: If a candidate’s deadline is extended or their assessment is reset, plagiarism flags will be removed.
-
Expected Similarity: If a question is likely to receive standardised responses (e.g. factual or technical definitions), we recommend turning off plagiarism detection for that question to avoid false flags.
-
Default Setting: Plagiarism detection is OFF by default and must be toggled ON manually in each relevant question in the Create tab. This is available for written questions only.
ChatGPT & Web-Based Plagiarism Detection
An optional add-on is available to detect plagiarism from external sources like Wikipedia or ChatGPT-generated content. These matches include a note indicating the source (e.g., https://www.wikipedia.org/
).

📍 Geo-Location Flags
If a candidate completes an assessment from multiple locations (based on IP address), they will be flagged for review. Geo-location flags are visible:
-
On the Select Page
-
On the Candidate Report Card
🛠 Managing Flagged Candidates
Flagged candidates are not automatically penalised. It’s up to your team to determine the next steps. Here are your options:
🔍 Investigate
Review the candidate's answers and context. Flags may arise from legitimate factors, such as research or prior knowledge.
💬 Engage
Some employers choose to follow up with the candidate directly for clarification.
❌ Exclude
If you believe the behaviour is consistent with cheating, you may choose to remove the candidate from consideration.
🚩 Unflagging Candidates
If you've determined a flag was raised in error or the behaviour is justifiable, you can remove the flag from the Candidate Card.
Please note:
-
Once removed, a flag cannot be reinstated.
-
If the candidate is later flagged for a different behaviour, a new flag will appear.
-
Each candidate is flagged only once per detection method.
🧠 Impact on Scores & AI Grading
-
Flags do not affect candidate scores. They are for your visibility only.
-
Manual grading of flagged answers will not be included in AI training data to maintain result integrity.
🔎 Where to Find Flags
On the Select Page
-
Flags appear once an assessment is completed.
-
If multiple behaviours are detected (e.g. plagiarism and location mismatch), multiple flags will be shown.
On the Candidate Report Card
-
Click the plagiarism banner and ‘Review Answers’ to see matched submissions.
-
Anti-cheating filters are available to help you easily view or hide flagged candidates.
✅ What Should I Do Next?
Ultimately, the decision is yours. You might:
-
Reach out to candidates to clarify responses.
-
Opt to exclude candidates where there’s a strong indication of dishonesty.
-
Proceed with confidence if the candidate has provided satisfactory context.
Vervoe provides the data—your team determines how to act on it.
