In the U.S. alone, there are more than 700,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs, with that number ballooning to more than 3.4 million, globally. To help combat this shortage, Vervoe has launched a new Cybersecurity Simulation that intricately assesses a candidate's knowledge within the industry. Employers can now evaluate a candidate's performance as they configure firewalls, patch vulnerabilities and investigate intrusions, all within a live and immersive terminal environment.
Assessments from the Library that use the Cybersecurity Simulation
If you'd like to grab a pre-made assessment that uses the cybersecurity simulation, first you'll need to navigate to the Assessment Library tab at the top of your dashboard.
The library has had a redesign to make it easier to highlight new content types, like simulations. Users can filter via the popular chips at the top to find the simulation question type. Simulations are also now highlighted via an icon at the top of the assessment card.
As part of the release, we've added 5 new cybersecurity assessments to the public library. Each assessment contains at least 1 simulation, and a newer streamlined format with fewer questions but more related tasks. These assessments include the following and will be listed under the new
Cyber and Network Security
category within the library:
-
Network Engineer
-
System Administrator
-
Cyber Security Officer
-
Cyber Security Analyst
-
Technology Risk Analyst
Adding a Cybersecurity Simulation question to a custom assessment
If you're on our former Starter plan or a custom Enterprise plan, you can also add the simulations question type to any of your custom assessments. This can be found under the new "Simulations" question type from the creation stage of any question.
Once the "Simulations" question type has been selected within your assessment, you will see a drop-down menu that lists the type of simulations (e.g. Customer Service, Cyber Security). From here, you can review all of the use cases and select the ones you’d like.
Each simulation displays a high-level name that reflects the task the candidate must complete and a description of the task including info to a candidate about the tasks, difficulty level, and the skills being assessed. The preview for the moment will be a generic video showing how the terminal works.
Candidate's view of the Cybersecurity Simulation
From a candidate's point of view, the simulation experience will launch from a question within their assessment.
Once the simulation loads, the candidate will see a central workspace with the ability to use multiple terminal windows via a tab system at the top. They’ll also be able to reference the question and steps within the task via the lefthand panel. If the task requires a network diagram, this will also be accessible from the side panel.
Candidates will be required to type commands into the terminal window to complete the tasks required for the simulation. Each simulation requires the candidate to pass at least 2 tasks. These tasks are auto-graded, like test cases in code challenges, however, at this stage we won’t be displaying the pass or fail result back to the candidate.
Grading and Candidate Report Card
Each simulation is automatically graded based on the expected commands a candidate should use and the outputs of those commands.
The candidate card reflects each of the tasks within the simulation, and how the candidate performed for each, by giving them either a "pass" or "fail". The different tasks are presented in the accordion of the question.
You are able to view a log file of the candidates' keystrokes and commands, which can help you determine which candidates may be more suited to specific tasks.
